Porsche 917 - 042 History. 1971

At the start of the 1971 season this 917-042 was rebuilt as a Langheck version. This car was driven by Vic Elford partnered by Gerard Larrouss at the 1971 Le Mans on June the 12/13.  Porsches 917 is one of the most iconic racing cars of all time known for its incredible top speed on the famous Ligne Droite des Hunaudières, oder Mulsanne Straight. Car Nr 21, the Martini Rossi, with Vic Elford at the wheel was time at 386 km/h or 241.25 mph.

Following this season the car was put to rest. Where it was stored remains a mystery but by the time the museum made the decision to restore the car it had deteriorated even more. It was eventually delivered to the same paint shop that was responsible for all the works livery painting.

One of the big discussions at the time was, "to what level do we restore it" ?  I was involved in the restoration of the car which took place at Stahls paint shop in Mönsheim near Weissach, taking templets of the original livery design and then re-applying the graphics once the car had been restored.  The entire restoration took around 8 months. The restored car makes regular appearances at classic car meetings and is currently on display at the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen
